How are Express Readers decodables different from leveled books?
Leveled books are categorized and leveled by an overall difficulty score based word count. They often contain non-decodable words, predictable sentence patterns, and repetitive words, which forces beginning readers to rely on pictures or guessing.
In contrast, Express Readers’ decodable books are systematically controlled so that children only encounter phonics patterns they have already been explicitly taught. This shifts the focus from guessing to direct sounding-out, building authentic reading accuracy and confidence from the very start.
What ages and grades are the books designed for?
Express Readers decodable books are primarily designed for young learners in Pre-K through 2nd grade, but they can also fit intervention for elementary students who need targeted skill practice with foundational reading skills.
What formats do the books come in?
Express Readers decodable books are offered in a high-quality, durable, printed format. You can also print some of the black-and-white copies on the Express Readers’ Village page.
Are there digital versions available?
No, Express Readers decodable books are printed books to ensure students have a tactile, distraction-free experience that builds strong tracking habits and allows them to physically interact with the text.
Can I see a sample before I purchase?
Absolutely! You can either see a preview of a book on the Express Readers Decodable Books page or request a hard-copy sample. For schools and districts, we offer a wider range of samples, so please contact us at contact@expressreaders.org
What do I do if I have a question about other books available from Express Readers?
We are always happy to answer questions, send samples if possible, or provide further information by emailing us at contact@expressreaders.org
What does it mean if my school is tax exempt and how can I order using that status?
Many institutions are tax exempt and will have access to a tax exempt certificate. If you are uncertain whether your school or district is tax exempt, we would be happy to help you.
If you know you are tax exempt, please contact us at contact@expressreaders.org or upload your PO and Tax Exempt certificate through our Submit a Purchase Order portal.
At the moment, our website ordering system cannot process tax exempt, but we can either create an invoice that is payable online or we accept POs. We will be here to help you with either choice! If you would like to pay online with a credit card, please email us at contact@expressreaders.org and provide us with a shipping address and the list of items you would like to purchase (or a screenshot of your shopping cart from our website).
Do you accept purchase orders?
Please send all purchase orders to orders@expressreaders.org or through the Submit a Purchase Order portal on our website. If needed, we will also accept purchase orders by mail at:
