This activity can be done with or without the long vowel mats.

• Students can sort by “long vowel vs. short vowel.” The example in the pictures shows this method.
• Students can sort by WHICH vowel. For sorting by vowel, simply print more than one type of sound mat (all five basic vowel sounds are included). Also, do not print the picture cards double-sided (leave the letter off of the back so students cannot peek).

Pro-tip: Print on cardstock!

This is a great center activity using manipulatives.
